CITY ON A HILL

After decades of decline, core cities in developing nation urban areas are experiencing a renaissance of development, both commercial and residential. This series provides information on this trend.

Los Angeles Reaches Peak Population

Data released today by the US Census Bureau indicates that Los Angeles has edged upward in population to 3,694,820 in 2000, up 6.0 percent from the previous peak of 3,485,398 in 1990. This represents the second smallest numeric and percentage gain for the city since the 1890 to 1900 census period, when the city reached 102,000 (the 1970 to 1980 census period was the lowest population and percentage increase). Los Angeles remains less the one-half the size of the largest city, New York, which reached a peak population of 8,008,278 in 2000.
