Falls Again in 1998

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Data released 25 January 1999 by the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that US private sector trade union membership (1998) has dropped to 9.5 percent of private non-agricultural employment.

  • The 1997 market share represents a 3.1% market share loss from 1997

  • Private sector union membership was last below 9.5 percent in 1902, when it was 9.3 percent.

  • Private sector union membership fell by 57,000 to 9,306,000, the lowest level since the early 1940s.
